Gili Islands – tropical paradises

Gili Islands

The Gili Islands are familiar to many travelers without ever having been there. The three islands, which are simply called Gilis for short, are easy to reach from Bali and are therefore often combined with a trip to Bali. The islands are particularly known for their tropical flair and beautiful white sandy beaches. In the following article, we will explain exactly where the Gili Islands are located and what you can do there.

Where are the Gili Islands?

The Gili Islands are located east of Bali, just before the volcanic island of Lombok. More precisely, the relatively small archipelago is located off the northwestern coast of Lombok. Gili Trawangan is the one of the Gili Islands that is closest to Bali. The distance is about 35 kilometers.

Getting to the Gili Islands

If you are already in Bali, the easiest way to get to the Gili Islands is by one of the speedboats. The boats advertised as speedboats in Bali are operated by several companies, so that several trips are possible from Bali every day. The boats depart from three different locations in Bali: you can get to the Gilis from Amed, Padang Bai or Sanur.

The individual islands

The Gili Islands include the three islands of Trawangan, Meno and Air. This group of islands was settled relatively late and later used for tourism. All three islands have a very special charm and invite you to a great stay. The individual islands are briefly presented below. Further information can be found in the respective articles for each of the islands.

Gili Trawangan

Gili Trawangan

The largest of the three Gili Islands is Gili Trawangan – often simply called Gili T. The westernmost of the islands has a reputation as a party island. And indeed, you will find some opportunities to party on Gili T. The island is home to many beach bars that organize parties from time to time, so there is something going on here every day. Nevertheless, you can also find peace and relaxation on Gili Trawangan. The white sandy beaches surround the entire island, so you can always find a quiet spot. In any case, the main hustle and bustle is in the east of the island, where most of the bars are located.

Gili Meno

Gili Meno

Gili Meno is located in the middle of the island chain. It is also the smallest of the three Gili Islands. Here, too, you can spend a few wonderful, relaxing days. You won’t find party-hungry people and loud beach bars here. Although there are a few bars, they create a rather relaxed atmosphere. As on the other two Gili Islands, you can also find some snorkeling and diving providers on Gili Meno. Both are definitely worthwhile. If you prefer to stay on land, you can relax, eat and let your soul dangle on the island.

Gili Air

Gili Air

The easternmost of the three Gili Islands is also very relaxed and invites you to a relaxing visit. Gili Air is well developed and offers a bit of everything. The island is not quite as quiet and sleepy as Gili Meno. Here you can also find one or two bars where you can party. And yet Gili Meno is not as wild and turbulent as Gili Trawangan. In addition to exploring the underwater world by snorkeling and diving, you can also go stand-up paddling.

Conclusion: Is a visit to the Gili Islands worthwhile?

The Gili Islands are relatively small and therefore do not offer particularly diverse landscapes.
