Lake Buyan – Danau Buyan

The beautiful mountain lake Danau Buyan is one of the largest lakes in Bali. Nestled in a lush green hill and mountain landscape, Lake Buyan boasts an idyllic setting. In the following article, we will show you where the lake is located in Bali and what you can do there.

Where is Lake Buyan?

Lake Danau Buyan is located in the highlands of northern Bali. It is right next to Danau Tamblingan. Together, the two are also known as the twin lakes. Danau Buyan is the eastern of the two lakes, which are surrounded by a beautiful green mountain landscape. From Singaraja, the lake is located about 15 kilometres south. Ubud is about 30 kilometres away as the crow flies and is located southeast of the lake. The town of Bedugul, famous for the Pura Ulun Danu Bratan temple, is about 8 kilometres to the east.

The landscape around Lake Buyan

Due to its location in a mountainous region, Lake Buyan is surrounded by a beautiful atmosphere. The region, characterised by forested mountains, exudes a natural charm and attracts nature lovers and those seeking peace and quiet alike. Here you can enjoy breathtaking views.

Several mountains rise up to 2000 metres above sea level to the south of the lake shore. The mountains are all covered with forest, creating a wonderfully green landscape. Here you can find some opportunities for beautiful hikes, for example to the crater of Gunung Lesung.

What you can experience at Danau Buyan

Lake Buyan is a natural destination that has fortunately not yet been discovered by the hustle and bustle of mass tourism. So if you are hoping to do wild water sports here, you will be disappointed. In most parts of the lake, the focus is on peace and relaxation. Nevertheless, it never gets boring, as there are a few nice opportunities for exploration and activities.

Camping at Lake Buyan

Right on the lake, there is one of the few campsites in Bali, but it is also one of the most beautiful. You can pitch your tent right on the shady shores of Lake Buyan and enjoy the panorama of the distinctive natural scenery. At night, the lake has a wonderfully calm atmosphere, so you can really switch off and relax here. On a clear night, you can see many stars in the sky from the campsite, as the area around the lake is very dark overall.

Hiking

The forest areas in the mountainous regions around Lake Buyan, as already mentioned, are perfect for hiking. The shady trees protect you from the sun, so the trekking tours are not too strenuous. In the forests, you can immerse yourself completely in nature. Many different species of birds can be spotted here, and monkeys are also frequently seen.

Temple

On the western shore you will find the most important temple of Lake Buyan. The Pura Ulun Danu Buyan was built on a hill at the edge of the lake. The large temple complex consists of dark stones and is protected by many stone guardians. The temple is not very crowded, which makes it look particularly mystical. It is definitely worth a visit. The Pura Ulun Danu Buyan should not be confused with the temple Pura Ulun Danu Bratan at Danau Bratan, which has almost the same name.

Conclusion: Is Lake Buyan worth visiting?

Lake Buyan is the perfect destination for a relaxing excursion due to its natural location and the many forest areas around it. You can simply enjoy the moment and the landscape without any hustle and bustle. Water sports or similar activities that would spoil the idyll of the lake do not exist at Danau Buyan. Those who want to stay longer at the lake can pitch their tent and enjoy the peace and nature. Danau Buyan is the perfect destination to switch off.
